NCERT CLASS 7 Civics Chapter 4: Growing up as boys and girls

Important Question

1.    Are the statements that are given below true or false? Give reasons.
a.    All societies do not think similarly about the roles that boys and girls play.
Answer: True. Most societies regard certain work to be done only by boys and certain other work to be done only by girls. By assigning different jobs for both boys and girls, societies demarcate the roles that boys and girls play. Girls should prepare themselves to look after the family in the future while boys should earn and take care of the family.
b.    Our society does not make distinctions between boys and girls when they are growing up.
Answer: False. Our society makes a lot of distinctions between boys and girls at every stage while they grow up. Societies assign specific tasks to be performed by boys and girls. The games that girls play should differ from that of boys. Similarly, society also sets different responsibilities for boys and girls since childhood.
c.     Women who stay at home do not work.
Answer: False. Women who stay at home does a lot of work from morning to night. But their work is not regarded as work because they do not earn a salary or income from that work. On the other hand, people who go out to work get salary or income. So such jobs are regarded as work.
d.    The work that women do is less valued than that of men.
Answer: True. Society devaluates the work of women. Women usually do household works. Moreover, women possess less strength and even supposed to be mentally less efficient than men. So the work of women is less valued than men.
