1.      What does the word biotic and abiotic mean?
 Answer: The word biotic means the living component of the environment and the word abiotic means the non-living component of the environment.

2.      What is an Ecosystem?
 Answer: The system formed by the interaction of all living organisms with each other and with the environment in which they live is called an ecosystem.

3.      What is Biosphere?
 Answer: Biosphere is a narrow zone of the earth where land, water, and air interact with each other to support life.

4.      What are the two major components of the biotic environment?
 Answer: The two major components of the biotic environment are animals and plants.


5. Give reasons.

            (a) Man modifies his environment.

Answer: Man modifies his environment to satisfy his never-ending needs. He cut down trees to obtain firewood, to make furniture, etc which creates ecological imbalance. Man destroys the natural environment to lead a comfortable and artificial life. Man thus modifies his environment.

            (b) Plants and animals depend on each other.

Answer: Plants and animals depend on each other for their survival. Animals inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. Plants, on the other hand, give out oxygen and take in carbon dioxide during the process of photosynthesis.

            Moreover, animals consume plants and the dead remains of animals serve as nutrients for the plants. Thus plants and animals depend on each other.
